Day 5: The first death
Today’s reading: Genesis 4:1-26
Sin has entered the world and mans desires are all over the place. What used to be a perfect life, living the perfect mission has now turned into survival for the fittest. We can clearly see what happens when man is no longer in God’s presence. There are competing desires as Satan, God, and man’s sinful nature seek the attention of man’s heart.
In the case of Abel, he did the right thing, as the scriptures say. We can only speculate because the instructions seemed the same for him and Cain, but Cain’s interpretation of them seemed to miss the point. Nothing to gloat about, Cain could have asked Abel how he did it, or better yet, asked God how to give a better sacrifice, but no, jealousy and rage overtook him, and he decided to ‘eliminate’ the competition.
We can do the same, we can kill someone by the power of our words, by making them feel bad or regret their actions, good or bad. We can be jeolous of someone untlil it becomes obvious that we wouldt help them if they were in trouble.
Have you ever used your words to hurt someone? Have you ever been so jealous of someone that you wished them harm? Please feel free to comment below on the outcomes of your actions, and any resolutions you made on how to do better next time.
While it is normal to be jealous of someone, it should not linger in our hearts. We should bring the matter to God and find a way to resolve it as soon as we notice it.
