Day 8: God’s Covenant with Noah and a Rainbow
Today’s Reading: Genesis 8:21-9:17
The flood is over, the land is finally dry and the world begins to recover. Plants grow afresh and all the animals start to occupy the land and multiply. Just like with Adam, God decides to give some instructions to Noah and also establish a covenant with Him.
But first, we see God at the end of chapter 8 making a key decision to not curse the ground because of humans (Genesis 8:21), man is still a ‘caretaker’ of God’s property, but God will not curse the earth because of him. God establishes a covenant with ALL living things in Gen 9:16 that he will not destroy the earth with a flood. God cares not only for humans but the lilies of the valley and the birds of the air so to speak.
The rainbow doesn’t belong to a certain group of people. Scientifically, it is what appears when the rays of the sun pass through water particles of rain. Perhaps it is God telling us that even if it rains, the rainbow will be a sign that the sun is going to come out and dry the land as the cycle continues. But God’s ground rule is that there should not be a killing of humans by humans or humans by animals. He also allows them to eat everything as long as it doesn’t have blood in it.
Do you think God has kept his covenant, and yet climate change has been a topic for a while now? But personally, do you believe God is interested in keeping His Word to you, and are there areas in your life that you still doubt His intervention? Feel free to write something below.
God establishes covenants sometimes unconditionally, and some other times, he does not require anything from us, as we will see with Abraham in a couple of chapters to come.
